The Dunsandel Lions Year 5/6 Basketball team have just completed a very successful season in the Selwyn Year 5/6 Youth Basketball League. All players in the team had never played basketball before this season. However the team has been expertly coached and organised by Liz Righton.
Great teamwork and fast learning meant the team finished second on the ladder. In their semi final against the Ladbrooks Cubs they rallied to overturn a halftime deficit to win 16-12. In the final they lost to the classy Clearview Cutters team. The Clearview team went through the season unbeaten and were deserved winners of the competition.
The Lions have been fortunate to have a series of coaching sessions with Canterbury Rams stars Marcus Whippy and Ethan Rusbatch. Another highlight was going to see the New Zealand Tall Ferns play Japan in an international match at Cowles Stadium.
Six of the team were selected for the Selwyn Raiders rep teams – Year 5/6 Girls Katelyn, Katie and Lucy; and Year 5/6 Boys Kane, Alex and Sam. The Selwyn Raiders play teams from Christchurch and North Canterbury as well as getting a coaching session before their match. This tournament and coaching is organised by Canterbury Basketball.
