We were very fortunate to have Olympian rower Nicola Coles speak to our children last Thursday. Nicola is an Olympic Ambassador and attended 2 Olympic Games (2004 and 2008). She also won a World Championship gold medal. She spoke about her Olympic story which she was able to link in the Olympic values and our PRIDE values. She had plenty of knocks along the way to achieving her dream of getting to an Olympic Games – she spoke about being inspired by Olympian canoeist Paul McDonald who gave a talk at her school when she was 7. What struck me was her determination to achieve her goal – her message to all our children was never give up in whatever you are doing – school work, sport, music….anything. She also had a session with our Year 5/6 children on leadership with her key message being “it’s not what you say it’s what you do”. I know the children and staff I spoke to afterwards were inspired by her message.
